I had flown into San Diego on 6/20/2016. As promised I was picked up by the hospital staff. We drove straight to the hospital where our heart was checked and blood drawn. We also met the doctors and they told us what we would be having done and what to expect afterwards. The took us back to the hotel where they roomed me up with another patient that was picked up at the airport the same time I was picked up. Thankfully we got along well. The hotel was nice, channel selection wasn't great. There were only 2 English channels and one of the channels seemed to play the same shows over and over. The staff at the hotel was nice and there were nurses that checked on you and brought you jello and juice. They never had popsicles there like we were told. I know that doesn't seem like a big deal but when you can only have broth, jello, juice and water, the popsicle would have been a nice change.
The next morning we were picked up from the hotel and taken to the hospital. I had the first surgery of the morning which was nice. I was slightly nervous but the staff made you feel comfortable. The hospital was clean. The surgery lasted between 30-45 minutes from what I was told. Everything went well. They encourage you to walk a little while after the surgery which wasn't to bad. I felt a little pressure or heaviness in my stomach but as far as pain goes I would probably rate the level at a 2 out of 10. It really wasn't bad. They provide you with medication through the iv during your stay at the hospital and hotel. They send you home with medication as well.
I think it was two days maybe three after the surgery you are picked and taken to a place to have xrays done. You have to drink this horrid 8 oz drink before the xray to make sure there is no leaking.
I would like to recommend that once you arrive back to your room you stay close to the restroom, they will recommend it as well.
All in all this was a great experience. I am happy I went through with it and the savings was great by doing this in Mexico.
It's been 3 months since the surgery and I have lost 33 lbs. I know that might not sound like a lot but I only need to lose 60 lbs. The weight falls off faster the heavier you are so don't let my number discourage you. I am very happy with the progress. I haven't even done much exercise. I know the weight would fall off faster if I did.
I eat very little food at a time. A quarter of a sandwich, a half a yogurt, or a few ounces of meat will fill you up pretty quickly. The water is the hard part for me. I haven't been drinking any other beverages besides juice and water and I mostly try to stick with water but I know I don't drink enough.
Things that were helpful for me to know before I left for California, bring bouillon cubes. On the flight they will give you hot water so you can have something to eat on your two flights.
Gas-X strips were helpful. They do have a pharmacy about 2 blocks away where you can by toiletries if you forgot anything. There is a little shopping area for souvenirs that you can go to a few days after surgery ($5 cab ride).
Things that would have made this a little better would be if the hotel had dvd players in the rooms. That would have made the time pass by a little quicker. Other than that I can't say anything bad about my experience.
I hope this helps you to make you decision. Good luck.
