Regardless of what type of surgery you are receiving, the process can be stressful. The nurses were really wonderful and kind. I was able to communicate with the staff even though the language is different. I felt cared for every step of the way. Dr. Almanza and his team met me each day to check on my progress.
I had a gastric sleeve with Dr. Hernandez and Dr. Almanza's group in 2016. I have never regretted that decision. I lost 75 pounds and have kept the weight off. However, I had been experiencing gastric reflux quite severely over last two years and gained a bit of weight through emotional eating habits during the Covid pandemic. I decided to have the mini bypass surgery to "tune up" my sleeve and lose the extra weight. Dr. Almanza explained to me that mini bypass would not alleviate my reflux due to the nature of the anatomy after the surgery. We discussed a full gastric bypass and the benefits of not only losing weight, but also preventing the reflux. We proceeded with the full gastric bypass surgery.
The nurses provided my fluids, pain and nausea medications through my IV after surgery. I did have pain. There is no way not to have pain after abdominal surgery, but it was treated effectively. I did have a drain in my abdomen after surgery. I arrived on Tuesday, had surgery on Wednesday, recovery in hospital until Saturday and then flew home Saturday afternoon. I went back to work on Monday. I did not feel like a million bucks. I had a significant amount of swelling in my lower abdomen. Over two weeks post-op the swelling has resolved. I have some incisional pain at day 15. However, I am feeling better each day. I am still on clear fluids and have just started eating yogurt. I don't feel hungry. I have lost about ten pounds in 15 days since surgery.
I am a Registered Nurse and have worked in the recovery room and Emergency Departments over past 15 years. I never felt unsafe with DR. Almanza and his team.
