I have wanted to have weight loss surgery for many years; however, my insurance would never cover it. Even though I had many physical ailments like back pain, hip pain, Fibromyalgia, elevated A1C, elevated cholesterol...just to name a few, my insurance still would not cover it.
In 2014, I joined TOPS...Taking Off Pounds Sensibly. I would lose a few pound one week and then gain it back plus some the rest of the week. After a year of being at TOPS, I had gained 12.5 pounds.
I then decided I would try the Medifast Program. I lost 40 lbs, but when Thanksgiving came around, I fell off the wagon. I couldn't resist the temptations. I never could regain control and gained 10 of my 40 lbs lost. The food I had to buy was expensive, and honestly, most of it didn't taste very good.
I learned about Dr. Almanza and what he was doing from some co-workers who had already been there, and they had amazing results. I knew right away that I had to do it. I was determined to find the funding. I knew if I didn't do it, I would be cutting my life short. I would be leaving behind young children and a disabled husband, plus my parents who depend on me.
I was able to borrow money from some family. I was even willing to go to Mexico by myself, if I had to. Luckily, another lady called me up and was looking for someone to go with her.
I was taken very good care of while I was down there. It was definitely an experience I will never forget. It was a big culture shock for me, being in Tijuana. I honestly thought I could use some counseling when I came home, just because of the culture shock. But now, I am 6 months out. I have lost 60 lbs since surgery. My weight loss has been slower than many, but steady. I lose weight every week. I enjoyed the holidays and did not gain at all. I was awarded biggest loser of the year for TOPS in my group. They have been a great support for me.
This surgery has changed my life. I weigh less now than I have since high school. I am wearing shirts and pants that are 2 sizes smaller, and I have "nice" legs again.
My first A1C was 4.7. My doctor said he had never seen one that low. My cholesterol is normal again. I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.
